Another Yoga Asana that forms an important part of Gout yoga therapy is:

Ardha Matsyendrasana or Spine Twisting Pose for Gout

1)    Ardha Matsyendrasana or Spine Twisting Pose – This pose involves the twisting of the spine, from top to bottom of the spine, simultaneously. It increases circulation, improves the flow of nutrition to nerves, blood vessels and tissues as well as increases digestion, prevents flatulence from the intestines and strengthens the muscles of the abdominal, thigh and gluteal muscles. It is also helpful in the cure of arthritic pain of the spine.

Procedure

  • Sit upright, with your back straight, legs out in front of you.
  • Bend your right knee and place your right foot on the outside of the left knee with the toes pointing forwards.
  • Reach up with the left arm, lengthen and straighten the spine.
  • Lean forward to and turn slightly to the right. Put your left arm through the gap between your chest and your right thigh until the right thigh is in your left armpit.
  • Try to hold your left knee with your left hand. It is essential that your back is straight in this position and throughout the pose.
  • Exhale as you twist your body fully to the right. You can use your left arm to lever the twist so your back muscles remain relaxed. You can also use your right hand on the ground behind your buttocks to make sure you are not leaning back and to further assist the twist.
  • Hold the pose for 30 seconds breathing normally, using your arm strength to deepen the twist with each exhale.
  • Slowly release the twist and straighten your legs.
  • Repeat the twist to the left side.

Precautions

Ardha Matsyendrasana is contraindicated for suffers of back pain or injury, as it stretches the neck, shoulders and hips and can relieve sciatica and backache, it could be practiced very cautiously and gently and under close supervision. It is not recommended for pregnant women to practice twists, although (after the first three months) some may be comfortable with an ‘open’ twist in “sukhasana” as an alternative. Due to the stimulating effect of this asana, it is not recommended for suffers of hyperthyroidism. As the abdomen is compressed, it is also contraindicated for people with hernia or peptic ulcers and during menstruation.  You can always talk to a yoga trainer about Gout yoga therapy for more personal and specific guidance.
