A massage not only improves blood circulation but also helps reduce the inflammation of the affected joints. As the blood circulates faster, it pushes the uric acid deposits away from the affected joints. Big toes are the most commonly affected joints of the body by Gout. Massage can help to relieve the pain and swelling in this joint. Here are some massage tips that can be implemented.

Massaging the affected areas like the bottom of the toe and the ball of the foot will improve the blood circulation in the affected area. Acupressure stimulation on the dorsum of the foot (point of Acupuncture) is also a good way to relieve the inflammation and reduce pain.  This also helps to prevent future deposits of uric acid.

Another useful therapy is heat application which may be done after the massage. Heat application could be carried out either by making a poultice of sand wrapped in cloth or by using an Infra red lamp. When using an Infra red lamp, care should be taken that the lamp is held at a distance of at least two feets from the body. You should also apply a thin layer of oil on the area, which the Infra red lamp is going to be exposed to. To heat the poultice, place it in a frying pan that had been heated with a thin layer of oil. After toasting the poultice to the desired temperature, apply it to the affected area.

Essential oils, made from extracts of various herbs, flowers, and fruits, can help in the treatment of Gout.  The ones available in the stores are aromatic and highly concentrated. Find out from your doctor or massage therapist, the right essential oils to use for your condition, and the right concentration before the treatment.

Some of the essential oils recommended for Gout treatment include Lavender, Eucalyptus, Rosemary, Camphor and Juniper.  In Ayurvedic medicine, the massage is done with camphor oil followed by a heat treatment using a poultice. You may also use these aromatic oil blends for a foot bath. The feet are immersed in a shallow tub filled with water and an essential oil blend for about 20 minutes. Epsom salt (magnesium sulphate) may be added if the pain is severe. Massage therapy along with necessary diet changes can expedite the relief for a Gout patient. Therefore, it is recommended by experts and health specialists.
